Sightseeing in Laurens, SC

This morning we drove the 18 miles north to Laurens to do some genealogy research at the library there. We stopped at the post office to mail a couple of bill payments and then drove over to the town square to take photos of the the Laurens County Courthouse.

We then drove down West Main Street and saw several large churches ahead of us.
As we continued further west on Main Street we passed by these wonderful historic homes.

We had to turn around several times to go back to take a photo of a house we had passed by when we were looking on the opposite of the street at another great house. It turned out

that many of the home are listed on the National Register of Properties in South Carolina. You can see all the photos we took in Laurens in our album - Sightseeing in Laurens.

Laurens became the county seat in 1786 and several battles in the Revolutionary War were fought around here. There is a lot of history around here - too much to cover here.

By now it was almost lunch time and we decided to try Whiteford's Giant Burger restaurant for lunch. We got there at 10:50 which is a little early for lunch. I ordered the Giant Cheeseburger Plate with FF and cole slaw. Mike ordered the Philly Steak Sandwich Plate with FF and cole slaw. Mike said his Philly Steak was pretty good (not the best, not the worst) and my cheeseburger was OK. We each had a small drink and our lunch order came to $16.00.

After lunch we stopped at a car wash down the street from Whiteford's and washed the car - it was covered in dust after driving down the roads in Magnolia RV Park yesterday.

Then we drove west through town and arrived at the Laurens County Library about noon. Mike went to the magazine section while I started researching in the Local History Room. I checked family surname files, books on Laurens County and any books that might help with my research. I didn't find anything on the Scott Family. I even looked up names of ancestors who lived in South Carolina (not sure what counties they lived in) just in the off-chance I might find something.

We left the library and drove east back through town to go to Wal-Mart Supercenter to do our shopping. We got gas in the Vue at the Murphy station there ($3.179 a gal). When we left Wal-Mart Supercenter we drove east through the town of Clinton to get to I-26 and then back to the campground.
