Trip to Edgefield, SC

We left the campground at 10:15 and headed east to Edgefield, South Carolina. We drove over the J. Strom Thurmond Dam and entered South Carolina.

We arrived at Edgefield a little after 11:00 and drove around taking a few photos including this one of Magnolia Dale built in 1843 which now houses the Edgefield County Historical Society headquarters and museum.

We stopped to have lunch at the Old Edgefield Grill that is in the 1906 house built by H. H. Sanders.

We were shown to our table by Marie and after looking over the menu and giving her our order, Mike walked around taking photos of the interior.

Mike ordered the Chef's Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with fries ($9)

and I ordered the Grilled Salmon with cheese grits and pico de gallo ($9)

and we both had sweet tea. The desserts sounded great, but we declined. We both enjoyed
our lunch and I especially enjoyed the salmon.

After lunch we drove back over to the Courthouse Square, parked the car and walked over to the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society Thompson Library. We were greeted by Tonya and I told her that I was researching my Youngblood ancestors. Tonya got several Youngblood Family Files and some books written on Youngblood families.

While I started my research, Mike walked over to the Olde Edgefield Barber Shoppe and had his hair cut for $15 plus a $5 tip.

I found some information on my Youngbloods and had Tonya make copies for me. After leaving the library, we took photos of the memorials in the Courthouse Square,

and photos of the buildings on the square. The Plantation House was built in 1919 and had financial problems and was closed in 1922. It was owned by Strom Thurmond from 1937 to 1947. The Plantation House was built on the site of the first tavern (1787) in Edgefield. At one time the tavern was owned by James Longstreet (1784-1833), the father of Confederate General James Longstreet.

Edgefield is home to the National Wild Turkey Federation and everywhere we looked there were these painted turkey statues.

We stopped at the McDonald's south of Edgefield and got chocolate milk shakes. Mike called CSRA Camperland in Augusta and the propane hose for our grill had come in. We drove south down to I-20 and then west to Augusta. We stopped at Costco and filled the tank in the car $(3.099 a gal) before going to Camperland.

We made a quick stop at a Kroger's and when we were checking out, the cashier mentioned a senior discount. We didn't know they had senior discounts and we got 5% off today.

It was 5:00 by the time we got back to the campground and Tinker was happy to see us. Of course, he had missed his lunch and he gobbled it up when I fed him. It wasn't too much later that he was "asking" for his supper.

All of the rain was gone and we had sunny skies and it warmed up to 90 this afternoon.
