Breakfast at Chef Troy's & the Old Houston Jail

Sunday when we checked in at Hidden Cove Outdoor Resort, Susan recommended Chef Troy's Talk of the Town Restaurant in Houston for breakfast and gave us a copy of their menu. So on Monday morning we drove 11 miles north to Houston and arrived at the restaurant a little after 9:00.

There were only a few people in the restaurant that late in the morning, so we had no problem in finding an empty booth. We both ordered the Denver Omelet (grilled onions, peppers, ham, tomato, bacon, sausage, Jack & cheddar cheeses) with a biscuit ($6.99 ea) and Mike also ordered a full stack (3) of pancakes ($4.29). The pancakes were so big
that Mike gave me one of them. Everything was great - the pancakes were light and fluffy (just like the menu said) and the omelets were covered with the meat, cheeses and veggies because there was so much, it all wouldn't fit in the omelet.

After breakfast we stopped to look at the Old Houston Jail just across the street from Chef Troy's. The jail was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

It was built about 1868 and had 2 cells. There is a round hole in the back wall of each cell that the prisoners had to use since there was no outhouse at the jail.

There was also a bust of John Anthony Winston, the 15th Governor of Alabama, who in 1858 signed a bill creating the Alabama Public School System and for whom Winston County is named for.

On our way back to the campground we stopped at the Post Office in Arley to pick up our mail at General Delivery.

Then we drove a few blocks over to check out the laundromat in Arley. We went to the bank across the street from the laundromat and I got 2 rolls of quarters.

When we got back to the campground, we drove into Section B to look around and stopped to take photos of some houses on Lewis Smith Lake,
