Benton, IL to Murray, KY & Superman statue

When we got up this morning it was cloudy (53°) and looked like it would rain any minute. After breakfast we started to break camp and were ready to leave by 10:00. We said goodbye to Frances (she had already taken Jack to work before we got up this morning) and promised that we would be back for a visit and that we wouldn’t let 6 years go by between visits.

We drove through Benton Town Square

and west to I-57. We had driven about 10 miles when it started to rain. We stopped at Sam’s Club in Marion at 10:30 to get gas in the RV and car ($3.739 a gal) and did some shopping in Sam’s. We decided to fix lunch while we were still parked at Sam’s. We left Sam’s at 12:15 and continued south on I-57 to I-24.

We have passed by Metropolis several times on our travels and have never stopped to see the giant Superman statue. So we made a quick decision
and went in to Metropolis to see the statue at the town square. There was no place for us to park the motor home, so we had to be content to just get a photo of the statue (it’s still raining).

There is a Superman Museum in Metropolis and we will have to come back someday. There is a state park at Metropolis, Fort Massac, that has a campground and would be a great place to stay.

We left Metropolis at 1:20 and crossed the Ohio River

into Kentucky.

We drove 24 miles on I-24 to Julian M. Carroll Purchase Parkway and then south to US-641 and we’ve been driving in rain since we left Metropolis.

We arrived in Murray, the home of Murray State University, at 2:40

There was no one at the office, so we walked around the small campground and settled on site #13. We do have full hookups (30 amp elec) and will be here for 4 days. We drove 124 miles today.

I got an envelope from a box on the office door and wrote out a check for $60 ($15 a day) and slipped the envelope in a slot in the office door.

Most of the people staying here are workers and they appear to have been here quite a while. This is not a destination campground, but it is close to the library at the university where I want to do genealogy research.
