Only 140 miles to travel, but it took 11 hours

We left Stoney Creek Resort this morning at 10:30 and drove out on Lake Drive which is one of the roughest roads we've driven to get to a campground.

From Greenville to Goose Point Park

We got on I-81 at Greenville and drove south for 14 miles and stopped at a rest area for 15 minutes while Mike did his walk-around of the RV and I walked Tinker. We hadn't driven too far south of Exit 167 at Buchanan when we saw a flashing highway advisory sign of a road hazard ahead. Well, it wasn't too long before we saw that the southbound traffic on I-81 was backed up for miles - as far as we could see and it was 11:54.

We crossed the James River at 12:10 (we had driven about 2 miles).

We crept along until we reached the next exit (Exit 162) at 1:00 and left I-81
to drive on US-11. It had taken us 50 minutes to drive 2½ miles from the James River to Exit 162.

US-11 crossed over I-81 and the traffic on the interstate was backed up as far as we could see. While we had been sitting on I-81, I used my smart phone and attempted to find out the cause of the traffic problem. A tractor trailer had caught fire in the south bound lane and both lanes were blocked.

We made pretty good time driving on US-11 since it was four lane until we got to Brugh's Mill Road where the I-81 traffic was being diverted to US-11. So once again we found ourselves in traffic that was creeping along when it did move.

We finally reached the town of Troutville and saw this neat antique store.

We were able to get back on I-81 at Troutville at Exit 150 at 2:30. It took us 3 hours to travel about 20 miles! Once back on I-81 we only had 4 miles to go before getting off at Exit 146 in Roanoke to do some shopping.

Our first stops were at Gander Mountain and Camping World that are next to each other. We had to park at Gander Mountain since there wasn't any place to park at Camping World. We bought a compass at Gander Mountain (the one we were using had a huge bubble in it and didn't work right) and a satellite signal meter and light bulbs.

We left Camping World at 3:20 and drove 4 miles to Sam's Club to get coffee, Snickers Bars and Splenda. We got gas in the RV at Sam's Club ($3.439 a gal). Then we drove across the street to Kroger to buy groceries. It was 5:20 when we left Kroger and headed south on I-581 to US-220.

By now we were getting hungry since we hadn't had lunch and we were debating whether to stop for something to eat or keep going to the campground. About 40 minutes after leaving Kroger we saw a Bojangles' and Dairy Queen north of Rocky Mount and decided to stop there for dinner. We had never eaten at Bojangles' and we had heard it was good. We both ordered the homestyle chicken finger dinner and then for dessert, we stopped by Dairy Queen for a couple of Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzards.

We left Bojangles' at 6:40 and kept driving south following the route that both our Garmin GPS and Streets & Trips gave to Goose Point Park. At Rocky Mount we took SR-40 to Ingramville Road to Fairy Stone Park Road then to Union Bridge Road

and then north on SR-346. We ended inside Fairy Stone State Park at the entrance to the campground there and stopped because the road we were to take to Goose Point Campground was blocked off.

We pulled into the Fairy Stone State Park Campground and learned that we should have driven east on SR-57 to SR-822 that would take us out to Goose Point. We made a circle through the campground and then drove back south to SR-57 and then east to SR-822.

We arrived at the entrance to Goose Point Park at 8:15 and checked in. We had already made reservations for site #57. We parked the RV just inside the park entrance and unhitched the car before driving up to our campsite. I drove the car up the hill and on the narrow winding campground road to our campsite while Mike followed with the motor home.

By now it was dark and there are no lights in the campground. Site #57 is a back-in and it was tight backing the RV into the site. Mike pulled the RV forward into a site across from us and then was able to have room to back in. We had help from the tent campers across from us and from a few others helping direct us back into our site.

By the time we had the motorhome parked, leveled, slides out and set up it was 9:30 and Mike and I could sit down and relax. We are SO GLAD that we stopped to eat dinner and not wait until we got in here to fix something.

There was NO WAY I could write up our day's travels on the blog and upload photos to our album on Friday night, so I'm writing this Saturday morning.
