Virginia Beach to Richmond

We got up this morning at 7:00 and after a quick cup of coffee and breakfast, started to break camp. We left Ocean Pines RV Park at 9:30 and the temp was 89° with a heat index around 101°. We drove south on Harpers Road which is 2 lanes with a deep ditch close to the road (no shoulder).

We drove west to I-64 and then took US-460 towards Suffolk and then north on US-460. We passed through several small farming towns ( Zuni and Ivor were 2 of them) and peanut fields. We saw a historic marker for the first peanut crop grown in America near Waverly - I didn't see it in time to take a photo.

Just south of Petersburg we connected with I-95 north and stayed on it until we got to the Chippenham Parkway and took it west to the Strathmore Road exit. We drove south down to the north gate for Defense Supply Center and arrived just after 12:00. The guard checked
our ID's and wanted to know if we needed directions to the campground. We thanked him and told him we had the directions since it was straight down the road and to our left. We ran the generator on our way to Richmond so we could run the house A/C since it was so hot today.

We parked the RV and walked around checking a couple of the campsites (there are only 6 sites) and chose site #4. We disconnected the car and Mike drove the RV to site 4. While I directed him, Mike backed the motor home into our site.

By now the temp was 101° with a heat index of 111° and Mike quickly connected the 50 amp electric and while I fixed lunch. After lunch we finished setting up the RV, Mike connected the water hose and put out the portable satellite dish.

We have 50 amp electric and water at our site. There is no sewer connection, but there is a dump station here. The campground here is fairly new - I think it just opened this last April. We do have a picnic table and a bench, but there is no restroom/shower or laundry.

Tomorrow morning we'll go to the MWR office and pay for our campsite ($20 a day) for the week that we'll be here. Even though we don't have full hookups, this is really close to Richmond where we're going sightseeing and do some genealogy research.

The hot weather is ending tonight with a cold front that will be coming through and I can hear a little rain right now. Our temps for the rest of the week are going to be in the mid-to-upper 80's.
