Photos around base

Mike called the MWR office this morning and got directions to their office so we could pay for our week's stay here. The majority of the buildings on base are warehouses and military equipment overhaul shops. The MWR office is housed in one of the warehouse buildings along with the Fitness Center and Cafe.

After paying $140 for our week's stay at the campground, we talked with the MWR staff for a while about the facilities here and asked about the food at the Cafe. We were told we could use the Fitness Center and can use the showers there. So even though there aren't any showers at the campground, making a short drive to the Fitness Center isn't too bad.
After leaving the MWR office we drove around a bit and took photos of the air craft on display near the Main Gate

and drove by the Bellwood Club which is used for special events.

When the Army bought the Bellwood property in 1941 the sale included the elk herd here. We drove by the enclosure that is near the Bellwood Club, but didn't see any elk. According

to the base information, the elk herd is small and numbers about 10. If the herd gets larger than that, then some of the elk are donated to wildlife preserves.
I forgot to mention yesterday that when we started out from Virginia Beach, we kept hearing a loud noise every time Mike stepped on the brakes and again when he sped up. I went back to the kitchen area while Mike was driving and tried to find out what was making the noise. It was one of our kitchen drawers opening and closing because the latch had broken.
We took a bungee cord and secured the drawer closed while we were driving.

After looking around the base, we drove out the Main Gate and drove about a mile up to Southern RV. We got a latch for the drawer and a new water regulator since the one we're using has developed a leak.

We also stopped at a laundromat near the base entrance to check it out. It was so hot in there (no A/C) and smelled like dry cleaning chemicals, that I decided to wait until next week when we are at Colonial Beach and use the laundry there.

We spent the rest of the day at the RV

and worked on a list of places we want to visit in Richmond. Mike replaced the broken drawer latch and the new latch we bought this morning is heavier duty than the one that broke. I worked on our genealogy in preparation for doing research at the Historical Society and State Archive.
