Virginia Beach Boardwalk

We left the campground this morning at 11:30 to go to the Boardwalk on Virginia Beach. We saw this dolphin sculpture on Atlantic Avenue.

We were looking for a parking place near the Cancun Fiesta Restaurant where we planned on eating lunch and found a parking lot in back of the restaurant. We paid the attendant $5 (all day parking) and parked the car. There was a coupon on the parking slip that was good for $5 off meals at Cancun Fiesta restaurant.

We went to the restaurant to have lunch before we walked over to the Boardwalk. I ordered the lunch Chicken Quesadilla and Beef Taco and Mike ordered the Burrito El Primo with beef and we had sopapillas for dessert. We really liked the sour cream dip that came with the salsa and chips.

After lunch we walked over to the Boardwalk and walked north. Oh yes, the Virginia Beach Boardwalk is concrete and not boards.

Today was a great day to be at the beach since the temperature this afternoon was in the mid-70's. The beach area is large and there were a lot of people enjoying the beach, but not

many people were in the water swimming since the red warning flags were out.

We saw several families riding on rented bicycles on the bicycle designated area of the Boardwalk.

We stopped at the Old Coast Guard Station museum. We paid $3 each to go into the museum. One of the volunteers, Howard, told us about the history of the life-saving service long before it became the Coast Guard. He explained the early methods of life-saving along the Virginia coast.

After leaving the Old Coast Guard Station we continued walking north up to the Naval Aviation Monument with monuments telling the history of Naval Aviation.

Our final destination on the Boardwalk was the 34-foot tall Neptune Statue that was dedicated during the 2005 Virginia Beach Neptune Festival.

We walked over to Atlantic Avenue and started back towards the car. Mike stopped to take a photo of this street banner and realized that there was a "No Profanity" sign, too.

We stopped at one of the Dairy Queens and got a couple of large Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzards and found a vacant bench on the Boardwalk to sit while we ate our blizzards.

We arrived back at the campground around 5:00. We are close to the air field here at Oceana Naval Air Station and a couple of F-18s flew right over the RV on their approach to the air field.

We took a lot of photos today at the Boardwalk (click here for our photo album) and at the Old Coast Guard Station (click here for that photo album).
