Sightseeing in Beaufort, SC

We had rain off and on during last night and then some really heavy rain this morning around 8:00. The rain had slacked off some by the time we left the campground at 9:00 and headed east to Beaufort. We got to Beaufort Dog at 9:30 where Tinker is going to be bathed and groomed. After giving instructions on how we wanted Tinker cut and leaving a copy of his shot records, we headed into town.

We located the Beaufort Visitor Center which is housed in the Beaufort Arsenal which was constructed in 1798. Unfortunately the museum there is closed on Wednesdays, but we did pick up some brochures and got recommendations for places to eat.

After driving around for a while, we parked near the Waterfront Park. We had a problem with the parking ticket kiosk when I tried to buy a parking permit - it took some of my money and didn't give me a parking permit. Long story short - Mike called the city and some employees came out to work on the kiosk and said we were OK to park there without the permit -since they were the ones who issued tickets.

By now it was almost 11:00 and we walked along the Waterfront Park looking for a place to have coffee. We had hoped to be able to sit outside where we could view the Beaufort River, but it was still raining. The coffee houses were full and we finally decided to have an early lunch. We settled on Hemingway's Bistro which is located in the
basement of one of the buildings on Bay Street. We walked down an alley and entered from the riverfront.

We both ordered the Reuben sandwich with potato chips and iced tea. Mike had thought about ordering the French Dip sandwich, but decided to try the Reuben which is one of my favorites. The Reuben at Hemingway's Bistro was good, but the one I had at the Firehorse Deli in Newberry, SC was much better.

After eating lunch we walked around Bay Street looking at the shops there.

We then walked down along the Beaufort River and looked at the boats in the Marina.

Then we drove out to The Point, or Old Point as it's sometimes called, to look at the old homes there. We stopped to talk with a couple from Dallas, TX that was also driving around taking photos of the old homes. We took a LOT of photos, so many that I put them in their own photo album - Houses in Beaufort.

It was still raining and almost time to pick up Tinker at the groomer's, so we drove about 4 miles over to the Wal-Mart Supercenter. By the time we got back over to Beaufort Dog, Tinker was ready and looked really good and ready to go home.

By the time we drove the 25 miles back to the campground, the rain had stopped. It was good to be back home and out of the rain.
