Olde Town in Augusta & Laurel & Hardy Museum

Last night I set our alarm clock for 7:00 so we could get an early start this morning. Well ----- I didn't notice that the time on the clock was wrong and we actually got up this morning at 6:00! I guess that when the electricity went off the other night that it messed up time on the clock and we didn't notice it. So we got to see the sunrise this morning over the lake.

From Augusta, GA

We left the RV around 8:45 and stopped to look at a historical marker and rock foundation that is just inside the entrance to the RV Resort. It turns out that the rocks surround the Hardin Cemetery. The Hardins were one of the founding families of Columbia County, Georgia and 4 members of the family are buried there. And no, they are no relation to either Mike or I.

We then drove down to the Augusta Genealogical Society in downtown Augusta. We passed by some beautiful churches and houses and drove around taking some photos before going on to the Genealogical Society.

The Augusta Genealogical Society's Library is house in the old Georgia Railroad Bank and we found a parking place right in front. I rang the doorbell and one of the volunteers let us in. After signing the guest book and storing my purse in one of the lockers, I told them I was

there to research my Youngblood ancestors. I was shown where to find books that pertained to my area of interest.

The volunteers were very helpful in assisting us and although I didn't find any new information on this area, I did find some information when I checked some of the Baltimore, MD records (the Youngbloods were in MD before moving to SC & GA).

We decided to have lunch before going on to our next stop and the staff recommended the Mellow Mushroom just down the street. We drove down to the restaurant and parked across the street.

We ordered a 10-inch House Special pizza (12.99) and a couple of Abita Root Beers ($2.25 ea). This was our first time in a Mellow Mushroom restaurant and Mike took photos of some of the artwork

and a waitress took our photo by the purple mushrooms.

After lunch we drove around the downtown area taking photos. We especially liked the Augusta Cotton Exchange that now houses the Georgia Bank & Trust.

We then drove through the Olde Town Historic District taking photos of the 19th century architectural styles - matter of fact, we took a lot of photos!

After driving around for a while, we drove up to Costco and filled the Vue's tank ($3.049 a gal). Then we got on I-20 and drove west to exit 183 and then south to the town of Harlem.

Harlem is the birthplace of Oliver Norvell Hardy of Laurel & Hardy fame. We parked at the Laurel & Hardy Museum and after taking some photos,

we went in to the museum. There is no entrance fee, just whatever donation you want to give. There is a small movie theater in the back of the museum where they show Laurel & Hardy movies. We sat down and watched a movie for a little while before going back out to look in the museum. There were a few display cases with memorabilia from Laurel & Hardy and a lot of items depicting Laurel & Hardy.

After leaving the museum, we drove down to take photos of the 2 murals in town and the water tank.

We drove around some of the residential areas taking photos of some of the homes

and then headed back to the campground. We got back home a little after 2:30 and discovered a young girl standing our campsite's grill with a fire going and it looked like she was preparing to cook some food. Mike told her that she was in our campsite and that she needed to leave. She had a neckerchief covering her face from her eyes down and never took it off. Mike saw her later over by the boat ramp and she still had her face covered. Really strange!

We're leaving here tomorrow and heading east to Yemassee, SC which is about 20 miles NW of Beaufort.
