Gladys, VA to Wilkesboro, NC

We did something last night we don’t normally do – we set our alarm clock. We wanted to get up this morning at 7:00 since we had 192 miles to drive today and needed to make a couple of extra stops along the way. We left Lynchburg Preserve at 9:30 and drove west to US-29 and then south through Danville to the North Carolina state line.

We stopped at the Piedmont Triad Visitor Center on US-29 just south of the Virginia-North Carolina border at 11:00. While Mike walked Tinker I went inside the Visitor Center to get a North Carolina map and I picked up a couple of travel brochures. We decided to stay at the Visitor Center and fix lunch. We were back on the road at 11:45 still driving south on US-29.
When we were just south of Ruffin, NC, we took US-29 Business south to US-158 at Reidsville. We saw several fields of tobacco crops

and then just north of Stokesdale we saw all these pumpkins

displayed for sale.

and kept driving south on US-158 towards Winston-Salem.

I managed to get a few photos of downtown Winston-Salem as we drove through on I-40 Business Loop.

It had been cool when we left the campground this morning, but by the time we stopped for lunch it had gotten warmer. We had been driving with the generator running since we left the Visitor Center so we would run the house A/C. The generator cut off just as we reached Winston-Salem because our gas tank was now down to ¼ and the generator cuts off at that level so we don’t risk running out of gas. We stopped at Sam’s Club in Winston-Salem at 1:20 to get gas in the RV ($3.679 a gal).

Our next stop was at the Wal-Mart Supercenter a mile from Sam’s Club to do some grocery shopping. We left Wal-Mart at 2:45 and headed west on US-421. It wasn’t too long before we saw these signs for Yadkin County and Yadkinville where some of Mike’s ancestors had lived and died.

By 3:20 we were just outside of Winston-Salem and could see some rain clouds ahead.

At Winston-Salem we took US-421 Business west to SR-268.

After driving about 4 miles on SR-268 we came to Jess Walsh Road that would take us out to the campground. We had no sooner gotten on Jess Walsh Road when it started to rain.

It was still raining when we got to the entrance to Bandit’s Roost Campground at 3:45. Mike went into the Ranger Station to register. He had made a reservation for the campground back in July, so all we needed was a map and our parking pass. Bandit's Roost Campground is a Corps of Engineers campground.

We are in site #A35 with 50 amp electric and water hookups. Our site is a back-in, but we’ve elected to drive forward into it so we will have a view of the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir. It was still lightly raining while we set up camp and we have our Dish 500 set up with a good signal.
We didn’t get any photos taken of our campsite today since it’s been raining, so we'll have to take some tomorrow.
