Appomattox & the Museum of the Confederacy

By the time we left Appomattox Court House National Historical Park it was 12:40 and we decided to eat lunch before visiting the Appomattox Museum of the Confederacy. We drove down to Wendy's and had our usual Wendy's lunch - Baconator meal. We took the time to write out the postcards we had bought at Appomattox Court House.

We then drove back to the Museum of the Confederacy. When we were in Richmond we visited the Museum of the Confederacy there and the White House of the Confederacy. The Museum of the Confederacy here at Appomattox just opened in March of this year.

We entered the museum and with our discount for retired military paid $8 for each ticket. We saw the uniform and sword that General Lee wore when he met with General Grant to discuss the terms of surrender.

We saw items belonging to the soldiers who were at
the Appomattox Court House battle.

We saw old photos of Appomattox Court House before it was restored and this photo that looks like it was taken shortly after the battle there.

We saw a photo of the original Appomattox Memorial and Monument that was discarded in favor of what is now Appomattox Court House Park.

We stopped in the gift shop, of course, and bought Mike bought a coffee cup and I bought a Christmas ornament. At this rate we're going to need a bigger Christmas tree to hold all the ornaments I've bought on our travels!

After leaving the Museum of the Confederacy, we stopped at the Appomattox Post Office to mail the postcards we wrote out at lunch and then drove down to Main Street and took some photos of the town.

We passed by the "new" Appomattox Court House that was built in 1892 after the "old" one burned down that has been recreated at Appomattox Court House Park. An even newer court house has been built and this one is now home to the Appomattox Courthouse Theater.

We drove around through some of the residential areas and took photos of some of the homes there.

By now it was 3:00 and time to head back to the motor home. We are leaving here tomorrow and going to a Corps of Engineeers campground just west of Wilkesboro, NC.
