Acton State Historical Site and driving to Opelousas, LA

We got up at 7:00 and had some coffee before we started packing up to leave Chris and Carole's house. We've had a great time visiting with them even if it was only a few days. Carole offered to fix breakfast for us, but we said we would stop somewhere along the way  and grab something to eat.

We left their house about 9:20 and drove north on FM-167 (FM stands for farm market) and made a quick stop at the Acton Cemetery. Chris and Carole told us that Davy Crockett's wife and children were buried there and we wanted to stop and take photos.

We arrived at the Acton Cemetery and found the gates were chained for vehicles, but we had no trouble getting in to walk around.

There is a huge memorial for Elizabeth Crockett

so it wasn't too hard to find her grave and those of her and David's children.

We walked around for about 15 minutes taking photos before getting back into the car.

We stopped at Burger King in Benbrook to get breakfast before heading east on I-20.

We reached the Louisiana state line at 2:30

and continued on I-20 east until we reached the Inner loop Expressway southwest of Shreveport and took it to I-49 south.

We stopped at an Exxon station northwest of Alexandria about 4:20 to get gas ($3.359 a gal) and to eat dinner at the Subway. I had a 6" turkey & ham and Mike got a footlong turkey & ham sub and we got some of their chocolate chip cookies.

We continued south on I-49 to Opelousas, LA where we are spending the night at the Days Inn. We stopped at the WalMart Supercenter to buy a few things we needed before going to the Days Inn. We arrived at the Days Inn at 6:45 and paid for our room for the night ($85.74). We traveled 445 miles today.

When we were driving out to Houston to deliver our motorhome to PPL Motorhomes for consignment, I had seen a sign about Opelousas, LA being 20 miles north of I-10. Mike's 3rd great grandfather had lived in St. Landry Parish and his 2nd great grandfather had been born there and Opelousas is the county seat. So we made plans to come back by this way and see if we could find any information on Silas Fletcher and his family.

I'm really excited to visit the courthouse tomorrow and see if we can find any information on the family. We will only have a few hours at the courthouse before we need to get back on the road.
