Valdez to Tok

It was 48° and still raining when we got up this morning. While Mike emptied our tanks at the dump station, I walked Tinker and tried to get some photos of the bald eagles and their nest. All I was able to get was a photo of the nest.

From Valdez Glacier Campground

We left Valdez Glacier Campground at 9:15 and stopped at the Tesoro gas station at the junction of Valdez Glacier Road and AK-1 to get gas (52 gal) in the RV ($4.179 a gal).

Our trip from Valdez took us past some of the same scenery and had another opportunity to take more photos of the waterfalls and glaciers we had seen on our trip south to Valdez.

We stopped at a rest area near Mount Billy Mitchell to get photos of the historic sign and the old cabin that is there.

We stopped for lunch at 11:30 about a mile north of Glennallen at a scenic viewpoint overlooking a valley where the Gakona & Copper Rivers join.

This was also the beginning of some road construction and several miles farther on the pavement ended and we had 12 miles of gravel and slow going. We knew we had reached pavement again when we saw this road sign.

We continued to have large stretches of highway that were patched or repaired with gravel and we had to slow down to about 40 mph in some areas.

When we were about 40 miles north of Tok, we saw this bald eagle flying near the highway and I was able to get a photo of him in this tree.

From Valdez to Tok

We arrived in Tok at 4:30 and had driven 253 miles and had used almost ½ a tank of gas. We stopped at Young’s Chevron to get gas (34.4 gal @$4.189 a gal) and get propane ($3.80 a gal).

We decided to stay at Tok Gateway RV Park which is next to Young’s Motel and Fast Eddy’s Restaurant.

We parked near the restaurant and went inside to register. We are in site #2 with 50 amp electric and water hook-ups. It’s a gravel site with spruce and aspen trees between the sites. We paid $23.50 for tonight with our Good Sam discount.

We had planned on spending 1 night in Tok and spending the next 2 nights parked beside Kluane Lake. We had spent the night at Kluane Lake on June 19 on our trip north and it was a beautiful view complete with a rainbow. But rain is forecast for the next 2 days here in Tok and at Kluane Lake and we may stay here 2 nights - we haven't decided yet.

It's been raining off and on and the temp has stayed around 48°.
