Tok to Fairbanks

We took photos of our campsite at Tundra RV Park before we left this morning at 8:15.

We drove back into town to stop at the Visitor Center to pick up some brochures for Alaska before leaving Tok and heading north to Fairbanks.

About 30 miles north of Tok we crossed the Robertson River and there was still ice on the river - a LOT of ice.

We stopped in Delta Junction at 11:00 and parked at the Visitor's Center to take photos of the markers for the official end of the Alaska Highway.

We also bought some postcards at the visitor's center.

Since it was nearly lunch time, we decided to fix lunch and write out our postcards while we were parked at Delta Junction.

After lunch we stopped by the post office in Delta Junction to buy postcard stamps and to mail our postcards. We had postcards from Canada that we were going to mail that had Canadian stamps on them, but since the Canada Postal workers were on strike we weren't able to mail our cards in Canada. So I put U.S. stamps on the Canadian postcards in order to mail them in Delta Junction. We left Delta Junction about 1 p.m. and headed north on AK-2 which is now called the Richardson Highway.

We crossed the Tanana River 9 miles north of Delta Junction and saw where the Alaska Pipeline crossed the river.

We saw The Knotty Shop which is 33 miles south of Fairbanks and I was able to get a photo of the statues made out of burl.

We drove past Eielson Air Force Base when we were 20 miles south of Fairbanks.

We drove past the city of  North Pole and, as you would expect, everything there is decorated for Christmas.

We got another chance to see the German Frankia motorhome that we saw in Delta Junction. It is a not unusual for us to see the same RVs numerous times since those of us on the way to Alaska are all traveling on the same highways.

We arrived at the Fairbanks city limits at 3 p.m.

and arrived at River's Edge RV Park around 3:15 after driving 205 miles from Tok today.

While Mike went in to register at the campground office, I walked over to the laundry which is in the same building as the office to see how many washers and dryers they had.

We are in site #H-10 a pull-through with full hook-ups (50 amp electric), wi-fi and cable TV. We're paying $37.75 a night with our Good Sam discount and we will be here 5 days.

After getting settled in at the campground, we drove over to the Safeway to get a few groceries.

Since we now had cell phone service, Mike called River's Edge RV Park in Fairbanks to make a reservation for tonight through Saturday. He also called Aramark the company that manages Denali National Park to make a reservation at the Teklanika Campground for June 26 for 3 nights.

While Mike walked Tinker, I walked across the street to take photos of some old road equipment that had been used in the construction of the Alaska Highway.
