Columbia Icefields to Grande Cache, AB

When we got up this morning we saw these 2 hikers walking past the Columbia Icefield parking lot. They must have camped out at a campground a couple of miles east of here.

Six other RVs spent the night in the Columbia Icefield parking lot. We left the Icefields this morning at 8:15 and continued north on the Icefields Parkway.

After driving about 40 miles we pulled off onto a turnout by the Sunwapta River to walk Tinker.

There were 2 signs at the turnout pointing towards 2 mountains near there and the signs had the date and name of the first person who climbed the mountain.

In August 2009 we had visited Jasper with our friends, Symphony & Al, and had a great time. We rode on the Jasper gondola and enjoyed walking around town. This time we decided to stop in Jasper long enough to buy a few groceries. We parked the RV across the street from Robinson’s Grocery and Mike walked Tinker while I went shopping.

When we were about 30 minutes north of Jasper we saw some cars that had pulled off the road and everyone was looking up towards some rocks. Whenever you see cars stopped like that, it usually means the people are looking at some wildlife. It was true this time and I managed to get this photo of some bighorn sheep.

We stopped for lunch just outside the north entrance to Jasper National Park at a turnout on the highway. We were about 77 miles south of Grande Cache.

We saw this young Woodland Caribou walking along the side of the highway.

We were arrived in Grande Cache we stopped to get gas at the Esso station. We got 189.741 liters at $1.199 a liter ($227.55); that’s 50.139 gallons for $4.641 a gallon. Mike asked the clerk at the Esso station where we could have our propane tanks filled. The Home Hardware store in Grande Cache sells propane, but the tank isn't at the store. They have the tank at the RV storage lot near the campground and someone has to meet you there. Mike got Home Hardware's phone number from the clerk at the gas station and called the hardware store.

We drove over to the RV storage area and waited for someone to come from the hardware store. For some reason the nozzle on the propane tank's hose wasn’t compatible with our onboard propane tank’s connection, so we were only able to get the portable propane tank filled. We had wanted to "top off" our onboard propane tank, so we weren't low on propane.

We arrived at the Grande Cache Municipal Campground a little after 2:30. We are in site #57 and have full hookups (30 amp electric) and with our Good Sam discount our site cost $27 CAD for tonight ($28.60 US). As you can see by this photo, we had to put the front tires up on blocks in order to get the RV level.

We want to thank "Anonymous" for reading our blog and for bringing to my attention that I had mistakenly identified a Woodland Cariboo as a moose in a photo. Since there aren't many Woodland Cariboo in that area, I am extremely pleased that I was able to "capture" one. This was our second time driving on the Columbia Icefields Parkway and we think it is one of the best (if not the best) scenic roads we have traveled on.
