Homeowners Insurance Sticker Shock

Mike called USAA to check on home insurance yesterday. Since the 2004 hurricane season USAA (& a large number of other insurance companies) no longer writes new insurance policies on homes in Florida, but we could buy homeowner's insurance through a couple of risk management companies that provide insurance for USAA's customers in Florida.

Anyway Mike was given a quote of $8700 for 1 year's home insurance premium and a second quote with lower coverage and higher deductible for $6700 a year!!! Talk about sticker shock!!

We called Jeanne (our realtor) to tell her about the insurance quote and she was shocked. She said she would call some of the local insurance agencies and work on getting quotes for us.

We got a text message a few days ago from Verizon informing us that we had used 50%
of our 700 voice minutes and our billing cycle only started on the 8th of the month. I logged onto our Verizon account and found out that we could double our voice minutes (700 to 1400 minutes) for an additional $20 a month.

Mike called Verizon to increase our calling minutes and confirmed that it would not change our plan with Verizon. We use my cell phone for internet access and we are grandfathered in on Verizon's unlimited data plan and we wanted to be sure that would stay the same.

The house was appraised this afternoon and we should be able to get a copy of the full appraisal in a few days.

We have finished all of the paperwork required for our mortgage and all of the inspections have been done. The mortgage company wanted a property survey, but one had been done in August 2011 and we are able to use it instead of having to pay for a new one. Every little bit saved helps!
