This last week has been pretty ordinary until yesterday. When we had taken out home owners insurance on the house, the insurance company had sent out a safety inspector to look the house over. One of the things he noted was the age of the hot water heater. He either wanted us to replace the hot water heater or have a plumber certify that the hot water heater was good for 3 more years.
Yesterday afternoon we called the manufacturer of the hot water heater A.O. Smith and gave them the model and serial number. We found out that our hot water heater was built in 1990 and the girl at the manufacturer couldn't believe it was still working.
After talking with the manufacturer, Mike wanted to check the anode rods in the hot water heater and turned off the water supply. He was unable to unscrew the anode rod because of the corrosion and when he tried to
turn the water supply back on it broke in the off position. That pretty much settled the question of whether or not to buy a new hot water heater!
Of course it was after 5:00 but Mike tried calling Maxwell & Sons Plumbing here in Sebastian and a lady answered the phone. Mike explained our problem and asked if they had an A.O. Smith hot water heater in stock. She said yes and asked that Mike call this morning and that they would be able to install it today.
So this morning a plumber from Maxwell & Sons came over with a new A.O. Smith hot water heater and installed it. We figure if the old one lasted 23 years we might be lucky to have the new one last a long time.
Mike was talking with the plumber this morning about our trip to Home Depot to get fittings for the new water pump and how a local plumber helped us select the correct parts. After Mike described him and his business card, it turns out that the man who helped us in Home Depot is the father of the young man installing our hot water heater.
It's nice to have hot water again but we really hadn't planned or budgeted to buy a new hot water heater!
