Pebble Beach, Marathon Museum

It was chilly this morning when we got up; 45°F (7°C). Al and Symphony left this morning to go to Thunder Bay and spend the night before heading up to Armstrong Station. Thunder Bay is about 170 miles west of here.

Mike and I just stayed at the RV this morning and had an early lunch. Then we drove down to Marathon to do some sightseeing. I had picked up a brochure about Marathon at the campground and it had a pretty good map of the town. Our first stop was at Pebble Beach at the end of Howe Street. There is a parking area there where you can look down at Pebble Beach and Lake Superior. There is a steep path off to the left of the parking lot that goes down to Pebble Beach. The main thing about the path was watching where you stepped because of the rocks along the path (didn't want to twist an ankle); otherwise it wasn't too bad. The driftwood and smooth, naturally polished rocks line Pebble Beach for about 1¼ miles (2 km).

Our next stop was at the Marathon District Museum where we were greeted by Cody, a college student working at the museum. The museum has exhibits relating to the history of Marathon and the industries that have kept this town going since the 1880's. It was established as a whistle-stop for the railroad and now has the Marathon Pulp Mill and 3 Hemlo Gold Mines. The town's motto is "Built on Paper....Laced with Gold".

We then drove down Scenic Parkway to a lookout at Peninsula Harbour.

We stopped to take a photo of this Chevrolet Corsair RV that is for sale in Marathon.

Our last stop for the day was at Extra Foods to buy some groceries. We had forgotten to bring our own bags for the groceries, so we were charged 5¢ for the 2 plastic bags. There was no tax on the food items, but we were charged 1¢ GST (5% goods & services tax) and 1¢ PST (8% provincial sales tax).

It was really a nice day for sightseeing - our high this afternoon was 64ºF (18ºC). After dinner we went down to the store to wifi.
